Remembering Pastor John Howard
Posted: July 29th, 2026

The Ontario Conference is saddened to announce the passing of Pastor John Howard, who peacefully fell asleep in Christ on July 25, 2026, at the age of 90.
Pastor Howard will be remembered as a man of deep faith whose life was marked by kindness, generosity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to God's work. His ministry extended far beyond the pulpit, touching countless lives through pastoral leadership, humanitarian service, and a lifelong dedication to sharing Christ's love in practical ways.
Among his many lasting contributions to the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ontario was his instrumental role in securing the property on which the Ottawa Seventh-day Adventist Church now stands. According to the church's history, during the 1970s, as various denominations sought to acquire land along the expanding Highway 417 corridor, Pastor Howard recognised the strategic importance of the site located at Highway 417 West and Woodroffe Avenue North. He took the initiative to obtain the right of first refusal for the property and later inspired church members to support fundraising efforts that made the purchase possible. His vision and determination helped lay the foundation for a church that continues to serve its community today.
Pastor John and his wife, Emillie, also shared a warm and enduring friendship with the Peterborough Seventh-day Adventist Church. Their encouragement, fellowship, and faithful support left a lasting impression on many members over the years.
Pastor Howard's influence reached well beyond Ontario. In 1985, he founded the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Canada, establishing an organization that has grown into a leading humanitarian agency dedicated to serving people regardless of race, ethnicity, or religious affiliation. Through his pioneering vision and leadership, ADRA Canada has contributed to improving the lives of millions of people around the world through emergency relief, community development, health, education, and disaster response.
In recognition of his outstanding service to Canada and the global community, Pastor Howard was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by the Governor General of Canada in 2002. This prestigious honour acknowledged his exceptional leadership and his enduring contributions to humanitarian work both at home and abroad.
The Ontario Conference extends its heartfelt condolences to Pastor Howard's family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his ministry. While we grieve his passing, we also rejoice in the hope of the resurrection and look forward to the day when we will meet again at Christ's soon return.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalised. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
Please remember the Howard family in your prayers during this time of loss, asking God to surround them with His comfort, peace, and sustaining grace.
